VRTA History

Currently, the history of the VRTA is sitting in one bag in my lounge room, finding dates of records back to 1974. I am in the process of scanning the history of the VRTA to add to the our website. I am also hoping that there are individuals out there that might also have other information on the history of the VRTA that we can add to the site in the coming months. If you have any documents, images, Pro Runner Magazines, programs etc, then I'd love to hear from you. If we can add it to the site, then we start to document some history of not only the VRTA, but how the VAL directed and was run in the 70's through to now. Please email me if you want to contribute or if you have anythig to contribute at shane@shanemckenzie.com

Attention: All Victorian Runners and TrainersYou will have noticed the attendance at certain race meetings this season of appointed testers from the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA). ASADA is authorised to conduct testing at all Victorian Athletic League Inc (VAL) meetings. The Victorian Runners and Trainers Association (VRTA) remain fully supportive of anti-doping policy and rules and related testing activities in the VAL. However, as many of you will be unfamiliar with the procedures that apply when you are asked to undertake a test, we thought it was appropriate at this time to remind all athletes of their rights and responsibilities when it comes to anti-doping policy and rules and testing procedures.A useful summary of these rights and responsibilities, extracted from the ASADA website, is included below:

The Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) has now confirmed that professional sprinter Andrew Muhlhan had committed an anti-doping rule violation under the National Anti-Doping Scheme.Following the judgment of the Federal Court, the Victorian Athletic League (VAL) moved to impose a two year suspension on Mr Muhlhan for the presence of anabolic steroids. As a result of this finding, Mr Andrew Muhlhan has resigned all membership, including the committee, from the Victorian Runners and Trainers Association. Andrew McManus on behalf of the VRTA has accepted the resignation and said membership has ceased effective immediately.

Jamieson's Stawell Victory

TWELVE months ago Sam Jamieson left Stawell a beaten semi-finalist for the third straight year. He knew something had to change, so a couple of weeks later he made the most important phone call of his life. Even though Jamieson lived in Williamstown, the man he rang was respected Ringwood coach Nick Fiedler. Yesterday the many hours spent battling peak-hour traffic going from one side of Melbourne to the other paid off, with the 21-year-old becoming the 127th winner of Australia's richest footrace.

IN the stillness before the running of the 127th Stawell Gift, there was no hint of doubt, no dark suspicion that the win would be anything other than well-earned. Afterwards, in the camp of winner Sam Jamieson, there was jubilation as his supporters described him as a beautiful boy and clean as a whistle . Jamieson, the pre-race favourite who won the 120m Easter sprint in 12.09sec off a 6m handicap, said he had paid no attention to the arrest of last year's winner Nathan Allen, who has been charged with importing steroids.

SAM Jamieson trains with the whiff of Cherry Ripes in his nostrils, but he came up smelling of roses after winning the Stawell Gift in dominating fashion yesterday. Jamieson, 21, had run the past three gift meetings, winning his heat each time, but had not been able to progress through the semi-finals to the final. After last year, he decided to switch from the Williamstown group of veteran coach Jimmy Bradley to Nick Fiedler at Ringwood.

SAMS THE MAN

A change of surroundings, some new faces and a new coach helped 21 year-old Williamstown youngster Sam Jamieson write his own piece of Australia Post Stawell Gift history yesterday. With a season of meticulous training with new mentor Mick Fiedler all aimed at a Stawell Gift crown, Jamieson produced the run of his life to claim the final in a time of 12.09 seconds from his six metre handicap. The quietly spoken Jamieson was mobbed by a band of family and supporters after his runaway victory over fancied pair Richard Hankin and Ben Vickery in his first appearance in the Gift final. I think I just needed a change of routine, there were three and half great years there (with former coach Jim Bradley), but I just needed a new environment, a new set of faces just to pick me up again for another pre-season and another long on-season, Jamieson said.

Stawell Victory to Jamieson

Coming from a long line of successful runners, new Stawell Gift champion Sam Jamieson reckons he's been blessed with family history and talent. And with coach Nick Fiedler harnessing the 21-year-old Victorian's love for the sport, his camp were very confident heading into Monday's 127th Gift final as the odds-on favourite. Jamieson duly delivered, winning in impressive style in 12.09 seconds off a six-metre handicap.

Victorian sprinter Sam Jamieson has comfortably won the 127th Stawell Gift this afternoon. Jamieson won clearly from the third marker in the famous handicap race, beating home second placed Richard Hankin and Ben Vickery in third. His winning time of 12.09 seconds saw Jamieson take home the $40,000 first prize. It's still up there in the clouds at the moment, he said moments after the race. There is never that 100% belief that you are going to get it until you have it. The 21-year-old Jamieson is registered with the Williamstown amateur athletic club in Melbourne and changed his coach last year.
